Welcome to October ...

Our October inspiration comes to you from Lyn Butchart with a piece called Green Peacock.

CRITERIA -  Monochromatic (can be any colour) 

Feel free to use black, white, kraft or navy as your accent colours.

Monochromatic colours are all the colours (tones, tints and shades ) of a single hue.

A little about Lyn Butchart ...

Lyn Butchart draws her inspiration from the vibrant, textural and ethereal spirit of nature.

Born in 1951 in Manildra NSW of Aboriginal Irish Swedish descent, Lyn has developed a unique individual style ranging from contemporary to abstract. Her fascination with the ocean inspires intricate underwater scenes, a theme she is renowned for.  She undertakes extremely large works on paper, some of the largest in Australia, and incorporates strong vibrant colours that bring harmony and balance to her paintings.  Lyn is a self taught artist with over 25 years tutoring experience. She has participated in many solo and group exhibitions, and her work is held in private and corporate collections worldwide. Her work has also been featured in numerous national art magazines featuring watercolour and mixed media works.

Lyn lives and works in Grafton northern New South Wales, and travels frequently to conduct workshops in regional areas around Australia.

This month we say goodbye to DT member Judy Willey. We all wish her the very best for the future and thank her for her amazing contribution and dedication to ARTastic as part of our design team.  We will be thinking of you Judy.

This was actually tricky doing a monochromatic layout. Just makes you realise how many colours you actually do put on a layout. I liked the textured look of all the peacock feathers so I textured my whole layout using old chipboard letters.

Cute as can be - I really like this photo of Daniel.....he looks a little mischievous here. I was inspired by the feathers.

After wavering between green and brown for this layout, I finally settled on monochromatic brown tones. The peacock in the inspiration piece prompted me to add a bird to the design.

 I went with pale blues and I also added a peacock.

I decided to do something a little different and got out my container of washi and put them to good use!

Welcome to September ...

It is Father's Day here in Australia tomorrow and as a tribute to the males in our lives our September inspiration comes to you from Robert Hagan and is called The mentor.

CRITERIA - Let's celebrate the males in our lives

A little about Robert Hagan ...

Robert Hagan is an Australian television personality, author, impressionist artist, and producer. He is best known for hosting the Discovery HD/Discovery television show Splash of Colo.  His painting depicts western, romantic, decorative, adventure, portraiture and maritime scenes.

Hagan's approach to painting is to translate scenes of everyday life into romantic, nostalgic and blissfully peaceful visions of the world. His subjects include the figure in a moment of reflection, animals, children fishing on the beach with their father, sailboats, rainforest birds, cowboys on horseback rounding up cattle or hunched over a campfire after a hard day's droving and dusty outback scenes of Australia.

Although self-taught, Hagan's style is impressionist using a limited palette of oil to impart a sense of tranquility and play on light to make the painting come alive. His brushwork is loose with final strokes of impasto.

Here is my layout of my two favourite boys who are not only father and son but the very best of mates. I love seeing them together.

The title is "Pizza is good" and the photos speak for themselves I guess.

I was inspired by the family scene to make a Father's Day card for our children to give their Dad. He's not a fishing fan but loves DIY and going to the hardware store and I have even used a hardware catalogue in place of patterned paper. I plan to recycle it as a filler card for a pocket page about the upcoming Father's Day weekend.

My nautical layout was inspired by the beach theme of the painting.

Beach scenes and seagulls always remind me of fish and chips at the beach.  I've used the same colours of variations of blue with sand and added a splash of red for the bucket.

Our August inspiration comes to your from Marie Jonsson-Harrison with "Balloon-Wedding"

CRITERIA - Feature things that fly either in the photos or as embellishments

A little about Marie Jonsson-Harrison ...

Born in Sweden, her grandparents were famous circus artists and her father is Adelaide based sculptor, Ted Jönsson. Marie immigrated to Australia with her family in 1972, and embarked on a highly successful career ‘diversion’ as an international model. Picking up on peripatetic life of her forebears she was to enjoy success as” Miss Summer Spain”,” South Australia Model of the Year” and “Australian Model of the Year”. However her rich artistic heritage soon exerted its primacy and she began painting while pregnant with her son.

Bringing immediate zest and life to the genre of Naïve or Naïf Art (sometimes also referred to as outsiders art, innocent art) she developed a unique painting approach wherein figures and objects are rendered in relief, giving the works a wonderful human and tactile quality. Marie’s art can best be described as Contemporary Naive Art.

Marie brings to her work a great sense of humour and keen observation of life, always presenting a positive and joyful experience often with a social comment about the human condition. Her paintings, prints and sculptures are for sale and are collected widely throughout Australia and internationally. Japan and USA has proved to be particularly appreciative and supportive markets for Marie and recently she has been making inroads into the European market.

We are making Halloween fingers for Halloween. Made of almond cake dough and almonds.....very good !

I've made a card featuring lots of flying insects (a moth die cut, a butterfly paperclip and some firefly patterned paper. I've also chosen a sentiment that ties in with the 'things that fly' criteria and the wedding theme from the artwork.
