I enjoy creating for online challenges as well as being on Creative Teams for online challenges. My style keeps developing but I do love flowers and layers.

Here I have a couple of recent layouts that are special to me.

Thank you so much for guesting with us on ARTastic this month Lizzy. I think we all are inspired by your beautiful work.

Our second May reveal ...

Welcome to our mid month reveal.  We are working with this wonderful work by Sarah Beetson called The return of the young prince.

Criteria is the use of stars

A fun card combining the stars and colours of the inspiration artwork.

When I saw the inspiration , straight away I thought of my Grand daughter who has always loved to entertain . I found these photo's of her putting on a concert for us when she was little.  She is our Little Star

I was inspired by the stars and the title, the return of the young prince, of the artwork. I also chose a dark background and red as an accent color.

My eldest is growing so fast and last year she had an end of year disco that was a 70's theme. Her and her best friends really got into the theme and enjoyed their special night. They had stars in their eyes, so the stars in the sky at the top of the painting reflected their stars in their eyes.

DI
This month I have constructed a large, iris-folded star as a mat background for the photo used. One of the papers in this was a stencilled experimental piece using Neon coloured inks and then oversprayed in sections with mists. The colours used  on my layout corresponded with those from the inspirational artwork. Smaller stars were cut from the same papers as the the ones used for the iris folding, with the addition of some stickers. I edged the stars with dots from gold and black sharpies.

JANE
I wanted to play up the star elements from the artwork by using a series of star embellishments and patterned paper and also including the star quality of my son's achievements at swimming when he was much younger.

Now it is your turn, we'd love to see what you can do ...

Remember we happily accept all forms of paper crafting for your entry including digital and encourage international submissions.  All we ask is that you create a new entry for our challenge and you are most welcome to combine with a maximum of two additional challenges.  We offer two prizes determined by team vote and one other prize purely chosen by random draw - so anyone can be a winner regardless of style or level of experience.  You have until 11.55pm on the last day of the month to submit your entry.

April winners and our May Tips, Tricks and Techniques ...

I will be announcing our April winners shortly but first I would like to introduce you to our next edition of Tips, Tricks and Techniques for 2015 presented by our delightful team member, Elaine Schoof.

Hi Elaine here,

I love using twine in my layouts; it's easy, versatile, cheap and colourful. I even use the cooking twine from the stationary isle in the supermarket.

I was looking on Pinterest for some more ideas and saw shapes made out of twine which I had to try. I thought I'll share with you how I did it. Following this months theme, I went with a star shape.
First draw free hand or using a stencil a star on a scrap piece of paper. This will be your template.

Lay over top some wax paper, you will be able to glue straight onto this cause it won't stay sticking.

Place glue along the lines of your template, make sure you use a glue that dries clear. I have used the Kaiser craft acid free glue for mine. Then it is a matter of laying your twine along the glue, making sure you put extra glue where the twine overlaps each other. It's a little bit fiddly and messy but worth it :-).

Leave your star to dry. When it is just about dry, carefully peel off the wax paper and if the glue is still a little bit wet, you can stick straight onto your page. It doesn't matter if there is excess glue, because once it is on your page, you won't see it.

I made 2 for my page since I loved how the first one turned out.

I also use twine for my buntings, which I do a lot of,

to tie onto tags for a bit of extra colour

to create a different way of placing photos onto my layout, in bunting style

and even to highlight a part of a photo without cropping the whole photo

I hope I have given some ideas on using twine and would love to see some of your ideas.

Thank you Elaine, love those ideas for using twine.

and now onto our April winners .....

And then it was May ...

This month we feature Sarah Beetson with The return of the young prince. I think you will all like this bright and colourful artwork.

Criteria is the use of STARS

A little about Sarah Beetson ...

When Sarah Beetson was seven years old, she had three ambitions – to win Wimbledon, to be a rock star, and to illustrate a children’s book like Quentin Blake. She’s come pretty close to meeting that third ambition, and has major clients in fashion, editorial and publishing. She also shows in galleries around the world.  Sarah spends most of her year in Queensland, Australia, returning to the UK for a few months now and again, on top of her other globetrotting endeavours such as a three-month artist in residency at Coney Island, New York.

Sarah begins by creating a background using spray paint, tissue paper and/or collage, which is applied to paper, wood, a photographic print or fabric. She then draws the linework using Pilot G Tec C pens. The image is rounded off with a full range of mixed media that can include acryl-gouache, markers, gel pens, crayon, stickers, vintage magazine clippings, beads, sequins, Letraset… and more.  From out of the chaos emerges glorious illustration work that finely balances colour, line and texture for a unique effect. Pop culture and plenty of vintage influences shine through in Sarah’s work. Her rock t-shirt collection includes shirts for Purple Rain, The Wall, Live Aid '85, Rebel Yell and the Joshua Tree. She’s also inspired by space travel, Coney Island, Americana, film director John Waters and artists like Antoni Gaudi, Gustav Klimt, Egon Schiele, Julie Verhoeven, David Downton, Antonio Lopez and Jamie Hewlett.

And now how the first of our team was inspired ...

I went with the colours from the inspiration painting, mainly yellow with pops of colour. Yellow from the prince's hair and the colours from the stars.

This piece of artwork inspired me to use, not only stars, but lots of colour. I've gone to town with the Gelatos and Mists. I also used the "emboss resist" technique on this page.

Stars and my grandboy go together, so for a change I thought I’d do a Project Life page for this challenge. I really loved the idea of using the colours from the art piece & incorporating as many stars as I could! The white ‘splotches’ on the background? Nail polish!!!

The inspiration for my “border" came from the background in the artwork.

I was inspired by the colours and youthfulness of Sara Beetson’s artwork. I thought it was a perfect piece to inspire me to scrap a photo of my son from his recent trip to Japan. This was the first independent overseas trip for my son. I chose this photo, taken at the Tokyo Tower, because it screams “youth, fun and colour” …. Just like Sara Beetson’s artwork.

HELENE
I stamped stars in different colors on the background and also used one big stickers star.

And now it is your turn ......

Please upload the DIRECT link to your actual entry with the link tool on the LEFT by 11.55pm on May 31st, 2015.  We'd love to see your new paper, digital, mixed media or off the page entries. Why not try doing a pocket page spread?  Please no back-dated submissions.

You may combine our challenge with a sketch and a product/technique challenge (so two additional challenges).  Please include our inspirational picture and challenge details on your blog post as well as provide a link back to us at ARTastic  ... and don't forget to tell us how you were inspired by our challenge.
