Welcome to our February guest ...

Please welcome our delightful guest designer this month, Fiona Johnstone with her lovely layout inspired by our artwork for February.

Thank you for asking me to be a GDT at ARTastic challenge blog. I loved this months challenge, as I adore carousels and was inspired to use some photos from our trip to Italy in 2013 of the Antique Carousel in Florence. We had a few rides on this. It was also a great opportunity to stop holding on to the beautiful carousel horse embellishment that is quite some years old!

Hi, my name is Fiona Johnstone, I live in Sydney with my two children Zane 11 and Lily 9 and one slightly crazy dog named Harry. I have been scrapbooking since Zane was born, so just over 11 years.

My style has been described as modern, I am photo focused and I love to use patterned papers but also mix it up with mixed media based layouts. It’s all about enjoying being creative for me!

I am currently on the Design Team for All About Scrapbooks and I also teach a class once month at their crop days.  I am also on the Scrap the Boys challenge blogs Design Team.

Our February mid month reveal ...

Welcome to our mid month reveal.

Our inspiration this month is this delightful painting called Carousel Delight by Karen Pierce.

CRITERIA - Butterflies

And some gorgeous inspiration from our second team ...

TONE

KAREN
The inspiration I have taken from this Karen Pierce painting is the joy and happiness it shows, the butterflies, the colours and the flowers.

ANNA
I was inspired of the colors and all the butterflies.

ANGELIKA
The inspiration- the painting reminded me of a carousel I photographed in Paris at Montmartre.

KAT
I was inspired by the pretty colours and the carousel theme to make a card featuring music notes, tickets and a tassel.

KRIPA
As soon as I saw the image, wanted to use flowers, watercolours and lots of butterflies.
Check out my Process Video HERE

JANE
I decided to go with something a little different in the form of a travel page and wanted to replicate the bronze background of the artwork by using a similar shade for my base cardstock. I've certainly embraced the butterflies in patterned paper, stamping and individual embellishments.

Now it is your turn, we'd love to see your own interpretation. You have until 11.55pm on the last day of the month to submit your entry.

January winners / February tutorial ...

I will be announcing our January winners shortly but first I would like to introduce you to our Tips, Tricks and Techniques for February brought to you by team member Tone Jensen.

Hi everyone,  Tone here, today I am going to show you one way I use to make my own background. It is also a great way to get rid of paper scraps and leftovers from your stash.

First of all I gesso my base page ...

Then I paste on a lot of strips of patterned paper. I have chosen to keep the colors in the same approximate color range ie green, neutral tones.

I add a new coat of gesso over the paper strips.

There are many types of gesso to choose from so use what you are used to and like to use. You can choose to not use gesso, but then you might choose bright, soft colors in the residual paper you use. When gesso is dry so I start with the colors.

Here I have used three different colors of green Glimmermist.  You can use watercolors, Distress Ink and water, Distress Stains or any other sprays….you name it.

When the colors are dry I use a stencil and modelling paste over the base to create my final background.

…when dry….you can decorate your page as you like it.

Hope you are inspired to try to make your own background - it is so easy but really effective.

now onto our January winners .....  thank you to all who played along, your pages were all amazing.

And now February ...

Welcome to our February challenge.  Hopefully now the summer holidays are behind us and the kids are back to school we can knuckle down and get our own creative juices flowing and scrap up a storm.

Our inspiration for you this month comes from this quirky painting called Carousel Delight by Karen Pierce.

CRITERIA - Butterflies

So many delightful aspects to this painting - you may love the colours, the flowers, the butterflies.  You may like to run with a carnival theme or be inspired by the idea of prancing horses - you might be touched by gold or inspired by tassels.

A little about Karen Pierce ...

Karen is a freelance artist with an extensive background in art education. She uses a range of mediums with a focus on drawing, painting and mixed media. The themes in Karen’s work are diverse, however they are significantly influenced by the natural world, history and culture and the power of the imagination. Karen works from her Old Post Office Studio located in Newstead, Victoria from where she exhibits her work, presents classes and workshops and has available a range of quality cards and prints.

Originally trained as a secondary art and craft teacher in Melbourne, Karen has developed a rare ability to inspire and teach adults and children alike as an art teacher, artist in residence and practicing artist. She currently teaches art at both Maldon and Newstead Primary Schools. Karen regularly works with residents, organisations and businesses to add colour and atmosphere to the local community. Projects include banners, signage and street decorations. In 2009 Karen was awarded a nomination for Australian of the Year for her work as an artist and art teacher in the community.

Since ARTastic is all about getting creative with our supplies it can all get a little messy at times.  Our prize this month might help you with that ...

And as always a lovely prize pack for our random draw winner ...

Donated by Tone Jensen

And now some beautiful inspiration from the first of our team ...

JUDY
I was drawn to the tassels and aqua colours of the saddle as well as the flowers and butterflies. The painting gave me a feeling of prettiness too which I tried to reflect in my layout.

EVELYN
I was inspired by the soft and pastel colors and the easiness of the reference picture. I used a photo of my daughter and many flowers and stamped some butterflies.

TANYA
The butterflies really grabbed my eye when I first looked at this painting, I really liked the cream and pink colours in the painting too..

TRACEY
I love the girly feel of the painting and the colour tones. I found an old Bo Bunny paper that really suited the butterfly and flower theme.

ELAINE
When I looked at the painting I felt a sense of quiet joy. I tried to portray that in my page. I used the colours of the painting and left a lot of white inspired by the white horse.

MARIA

Now we have winter :( so I wish for summer and the butterflies in my mini-album Castle-butterflies!

HELENE
I recently fixed our daughter's room in a jungle theme and a photo of her new wall paper was perfect for a "crazy" butterfly layout.
